General surgery is one of the most comprehensive and important fields of medicine. The diversity of the organs of interest and their diseases and treatments, as well as the rapidly growing technology available to us makes it impossible for one person to have the same knowledge and expertise in all areas. That is why we have a team of Professors and Consultants in every field of general surgery available to help you. Each doctor is a specialist in his or her own chosen field of expertise.
It would be impossible to list all the surgeries that we perform so please do get in touch with us to discuss your own case.
The doctor will review your symptoms, and then perform a physical examination, and possibly order some blood tests prior to an endoscopy. These tests will help your doctor gain a more accurate understanding of the possible cause of your symptoms. These tests may also help them determine if the problems can be treated.
GASTROSCOPY (or endoscopy) is an examination of the oesophagus (gullet or food pipe), stomach and duodenum (upper part of the small bowel) using a flexible telescope called a gastroscope. When necessary, during the examination, a number of small procedures can also be carried out.
Conditions a Gastroscopy can detect
Your doctor may recommend this procedure to Investigate intestinal signs and symptoms. A colonoscopy can help your doctor explore possible causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal problems.
SCREEN FOR COLON CANCER. Colonoscopy is one of a few options for colon cancer screening.
TO LOOK FOR POLYPS. If you have had polyps before, your doctor may recommend a follow-up colonoscopy to look for and remove any additional polyps. This is done to reduce your risk of colon cancer.
TO TREAT AN ISSUE. Sometimes, a colonoscopy may be done for treatment purposes, such as placing a stent or removing an object in your colon.
These are some of the most common procedures we carry out in General Surgery.
Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. This procedure is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.
Common laparoscopic procedures include:
Laparoscopic surgery on the colon includes diverticulosis, the removal of large growths called polyps that can’t be completely removed by colonoscopy, and colon cancer.
There are two different ways of performing this surgery.
Open hernia surgery. The surgeon makes a cut in the groin to view and repair the hernia. …
Laparoscopic hernia surgery. The surgeon makes several small cuts in the lower abdomen and inserts special tools to view and repair the hernia. Your doctor will discuss your individual case with you and decide which procedure is most appropriate for you. It is suggested that you take a few days to recover and rest. Within reason ( and avoiding lifting heavy objects or strenuous activity) returning to normal activity as soon as possible will most likely enhance your recovery. Your doctor will discuss the recovery procedure with you.
